The Luck Of The Irish

Two Brilliant events with St Pats day in the middle and the Irish horses are coming out on top!

Firstly we had Tonimbuk. Finally Justice (ESB Irish Justice) gets to join the team for his first event of the season. Even though he is competing at the highest level he certainly brings a sense of  calm and contentment to my truck that can only come with the company of a dear old friend.
The week leading to Tonimbuk was stressful as on the Wednesday Justice can barely trot because of a nasty abcess. A huge thank you to Vaughn Ellis, my farrier, who truly did perform a miracle. So luckily Justice still got to come complete with a special boot to keep his foot protected and dry (poor Justy looked a little like the bionic horse).
Dressage day was a busy one as I was riding five horses with two in the introductory class (that means five dressage tests and two show jumping in the one day). My two hard working grooms were also riding a horse each in the introductory class.
Zoney (ESB Golden Zone) put together a very cute test to take 10th place after the dressage in a tough field. Every time I take him out he improves a little bit more. The canter transitions were smoother and overall the test flowed a lot better I was extremely pleased with him. He really shone though in the show jumping. After Geelong where he was quite tense, Zone was very relaxed and rideable. He executed a beautiful clear round in the indoor. very good pony!
Finally at 7:15 at night my moment on Justice comes! He has been feeling so good the last couple of weeks I can't wait. The atmosphere in the indoor really lifts both me Justice and I and he produces a stunning test and I feel a personal best! The scores reflect it as well. In a field of twenty one Justice is sitting third, just behind Meagan Jones on Kirby Park Irish Jester and her second ride Kirby Park Allofasudden is in first place.
Bring on cross country day!
Justice was out on cross country early which I think suits the both of us. The course was full of ditches to keep us on our toes, but there was definitely no problem with any of them. It was a fantastic feeling to not only finish clear, but also to feel I rode exactly to the plan that Will Enzinger helped me devise for our bogey fences. Well almost exactly... Justice kept me on my toes by having a stumble on landing in the water. Somehow, I think more through sheer determination, I managed to stay up until Justy regained his feet and still turn out and up over a bank and then two strides two a skinny brush arrow head (thank you Justice for being so honest that I can jump a skinny with my reins on the buckle). It was a lot hairier than i would have liked, but judging by the cheers from the crowd they appreciated the entertainment.
Zones xc was a lot more tame and quite a relief after the excitement of Justice's round. He popped around everything beautifully, but I still kept him quite slow so incurred quite a few time penalties. He finished 15th and with no jumping faults in either of the jump phases. Very happy.
Justice had slipped to 4th coming into show jumping due to time penalties xc. He jumped a very smooth round but unfortunately had three rails which dropped him to 5th. Still in a field of twenty one I was super happy with my grey boys!

Next is one of my favourite events Wandin Horse Trials. Again Justice gets to come out with the other boys and again puts in a solid performance.
After a lovely night at the annual Wandin cocktail party, dressage gets under way quite late, starting with the three star. Justice is feeling great, but unfortunately a little too good and I can feel  I need to try and pad his warm up out with a lot of walk so I don't over do it. As hard as I try he still ends up a little 'over cooked' and flat in his dressage and although he is accurate he doesn't quite have the quality in the paces that he did the previous competition. Still, to my delight, it's good enough for first place in the much smaller field!
Zone had been working the best he ever has all week and I was excited to see what he could produce on the day. He didn't disappoint me, pulling off his best test to date! I'm so proud of the way he warmed up and the test he produced  was lovely. Unfortunately he did have the curse of being first on and I don't think his score quite reflected the test he did and he was sitting 9th after dressage.
Zone wasn't quite as settled as he was at Tonimbuk in the show jumping and had difficulty with the other horses in the warm up. He had two rails which were down to distraction, but still quite frustrating after the beautiful round  the week before.
On Sunday Zone went cross country early. Although a little spooky at the water, he made light work of the course and came home clear and only eight seconds over time. It was good enough to secure him 8th place and his first ever ribbon!
Justice show jumped before his cross country, which I don't really like because I think Justy jumps better when there is still a little bit  of adrenaline left over from cross country. On a very deep surface he had three rails. Again he jumped a nice round, but still the rails were devestating. I really had to work hard to pick myself up and get in the zone for cross country. This was something I found difficult, but I've been having some sports performance sessions with Nicole Stewart and some of the tools she gave me helped so much to pull me out of my post show jumping slump. I'm so glad I had that help and was aware enough to realise I had to 'snap out of it' as I wasn't in the right state of mind to complete a tough cross country. A huge thankyou to Nicole and the help she has given me.
With me back in a positive, attacking state of mind and Justice being his usual amazing self we completed a fantastic clear cross country, in fairly good time, to move us from 4th after show jumping to 3rd.
Another great result and a ribbon  each for my grey boys!

ESB Golden Zone Eventing Debut

Wow! What an exciting couple of weeks.
After making the 5 hour trip to Warnambool, Zoney the pony had a lovely practice ride and seemed well settled at the showgrounds. The next morning Zone was first up in the dressage. I was so impressed with his behavior in the warm up ring. It was a small area with many other horses and he behaved beautifully. The main aim for this first test was for Zone to behave and be relaxed in the arena. I don't want him to see competing as a stressful situation, so I'm keeping the pressure light until I know he is happy in the environment. Still I was extremely pleased with what he produced. A little green in the canter transitions and a little wobbly on the center lines, but over all a sweet relaxed test that secured 10th place.
Show jumping, again I couldn't have been happier. He was confident and responsive in the warm up and didn't have a problem with the other horses. In the ring he out did himself again producing a very mature clear round. Zone was turning more than a few heads.
Sunday afternoon Zone had to tackle quite a challenging cross country course. once Again I was beyond pleased with his performance. Although a little wobbly and green at times he was tested with skinnies, ditches and many related lines. We did have a slight difference of opinion at the second last fence, which was off a long gallop stretch and I think Zone was enjoying him self so much that he was quite surprised when a fence jumped out at him.
Never mind, a fantastic result for his first official competition.

Two weeks later and Zone was back on the truck with the rest of the team on his way to Geelong horse Trials. The conditions at Geelong weren't as perfect as Warnmbool, with showers and howling wind making Zone a little more edgey than at his last event. Still I was happy with his dressage. He is understanding the contact a lot better now and I'm finding it a lot easier to get the response I'm after from my leg. Still the canter trasitions left a little to be desired which really effected our score. However I'm now feeling confident enough to put more pressure on him when were out because I know he is happy with the enviroment.
The show jumping wasn't quite as relaxed as the previous weekend Zone was having a lot of trouble dealing with the rain, wind and all the other young horses that were in the warm up at the same time as us. He improved once he was in the ring and took one rail through the double where he over jumped a little. Although he wasn't as settled as I would have liked, he did well in the conditions.
Cross country was where Zone really excelled. I started trotting and popping the first few but quickly settled into a rhythm and jumped everything beautifully, including quite a large trakena.
I'm so thrilled with these first two events and am really enjoying riding him.
I cant wait for this weekend to challenge him again and hopefully this time with a bit more of and improvement in the dressage.
Stay tuned for an update Not only on ESB Golden Zone, but also ESB Irish Justice who will be coming out for the first time this year in the CIC3* class at the Tonimbuk Horse trials state championships!

Current Activities

2011 Finished with a real bang as ESB Irish justice placed 5th in the CCI 3* and Lakes and Craters Three day event. Up against riders the likes of Stuart Tinney and Christine Bates who were trying to qualify for London, Justice powered through a very tough cross country course and jumped one of only three clear rounds to hold his 5th position that had gained after the dressage. What a star!

After a much needed break over the holiday season (for me and the boys) we are now all back to work and well underway with preparations for the new season.
Justy has a big year ahead of him and has come back firing! I cant wait to take him out again and am so excited about tackling the challenges of 2012!

A little break was just what Zone needed. He has come back in a much more mature horse physically as well as mentally. Not only has he grown so much and really filled out, but he is more trusting, more brave and less over sensitive than last year. He is absolutely stunning!
his first competition is in five weeks and I cant wait to see how he goes.

ESB Golden Zone

ESB Golden Zone (or Zoney the Pony as he is affectionately known) is a 16.2hh grey 6yo gelding.
Zone came to me in march 2011. He was a lot smaller, quite sensitive and unmistakably cute. He is currently in full work preparing for his introductory level debut and going brilliantly.
When Zone first came it was clear he had talent and was a beautiful mover, but was a bit over sensitive and could get quite worried. This made him quite hard to ride as any movement I made could startle him.
I started  trying to get him used to different movements of my body, but even if he seemed to have make progress by the end of the ride it didn't seem to have stuck.
I enlisted the help of Matt Ravenhorst, a local horseman that was helping me break in another young horse. For a few weeks we just did ground work with him, first working on getting him more in tune with me and then working on 'teaching him to be brave'. Matt has a fantastic way of working with the young horses that really focuses on looking for the responses the horses are giving you. He stresses that horses learn by trying things and learn what is the correct response by the reaction the get from their rider. This method really worked. You can imagine my thrill when I was sitting on top of a horse, who previously got scared if i scratched my leg, cracking a whip while he lowered his head and licked his lips.

I started doing some jump work with Zone and he really wowed my show jump coach (Adam Wotten) and I with the raw potential he was demonstrating. Again though he was starting to over jump things because he was worried and wasn't super happy with what he was doing. Interestingly enough in cross country he didn't have the same problem. He was very settled and brave. I'm conquering the show jumping by incorporating poles and jumping into every work out. He is a lot more settled and becoming so much more rideable on the flat as well.
I couldn't be happier with the way he has progressed through these quirky little issues.

The most recent challenge that has been over come... teaching Zone to eat carrots!! He has finally decided I'm not trying to feed him poison and is now happy to receive a treat after all his hard work.

My First ESB Horse

ESB Irish Justice
I got Justice as a six year old when I was fifteen (nine years ago). When I got him he had done some light dressage and some trail riding. He was my first green horse and I couldn't have asked for a better horse to gain this experience on. Although Justice is extremely cheeky he is also very willing and trainable making him a fantastic partner for me to have learnt how to train a young horse.
In the nine years we have been working together Justice and I have progressed from pony club to EA 3* Eventing . During this time Justice and I have been selected on:
  • Victorian Eventing Young Rider Squad 2005-2009
  • National Eventing Youth Development Squad 2007-2009
  • Victorian Eventing High Performance Squad 2009-2011
  • Young Rider Trans Tasman Team (Eventing) 2009
Justice has been a consistent performer the whole time we have had a partnership. Some of his more memorable performances are:
  • Winner PCAV Grade 1 State Championships (and member of winning team) 2005
  • Winner CCI J 1* Melbourne International Three Day Event 2005
  • Winner Toradin  Horse Trails CNC 2* 2006
  • 3rd Lakes and Craters  Three Day Event CCI 2* 2008
  • 3rd Wandin Horse Trials CIC 3* 2010
  • 4th Narracorte Horse Trials CNC 3* 2010
  • 10th Goulburn Horse Trials CIC 3* 2010
  • 5th Camperdown Horse Trials CIC 3* 2010
Ive been so lucky to have such a special horse so early in my career who has been my partner in so many amazing experiences. Being part of a team representing my country on such a wonderful horse has been a highlight of my career so far.  Horses that not only have talent, but also temperament and heart are very hard to find and I've definitely found one in Justice.
I love seeing his ears pricked looking at me through the window, him picking up buckets and throwing them at me (saying 'clearly I'm starving!!') and his 'game face' (which tends to consist mostly of a drooping lower lip).
What a super horse, I owe him everything.
